Definitely not on Maui* - but a fabulous inspiration nonetheless

Before Paul Rudolph became known for his brutalist works, he was creating some incredible houses in Sarasota. The Umbrella house is a case in point - brilliantly executed site specific house with a giant “Umbrella” shade over the pool. The rest of the house is delightful in its multilevel airiness - with bedrooms shrinking in scale to perfectly accommodate their occupants. A proliferation of jalousies lets the house open up to the florida breeze and a galleried bridge overlooks the central living space and connects the two very private upstairs bedrooms.

*My goal with Modern on Maui is to introduce people to the joy of architecture and open their eyes to the possibility of creating something very site specific. To that end I include interesting projects that are not on Maui as a springboard for inspiration.
