A Young Architect draws a straight line in Upcountry Maui

When you have the kind of beauty before you that Maui tends to deliver from its Upcountry elevations, it’s hard to stay out of architectural “view gluttony”. Here, though, restraint wins and any sense of gluttony is cleverly randomized away by a stretching and assembling of varied form and surface elements in a long straight line. Translation: The view gets enjoyed from every place in this house, but there is a sweet meandering of these elements along a straight ridge that deletes any sense of spatial monotony. So the linearity becomes the journey and along the way, the variations in scale, colors, and materials offer up a delightfully diverse sense of space, and the character of the space changes as you move down the line.

Mexico City Based Architect Alvaro Moragrega

When this house was built, the architect was barely in his 30s! - Imagine having the opportunity to design for such a compelling location. Alavaro designed this house for his brother and their family - horse enthusiasts, and there are playful nods to the horse world embedded in design elements. Think stables, horse hitches, barn materials, corrugated metals. All these are sophisticatedly morphed into a pleasing modern architectural program that hugs tightly into the hill and offers big city design sense with warm and comfortable upcountry living. Take a look at Alvaro’s work at his own website: http://www.alvaromoragrega.com

The house sold in June 2019. If you’d like to acquire something like this - please reach out to me liamball@hawaiilife.com Liam Ball RB-21691
